When I woke again, it was with Xavyr’s arms around me. I remembered that at some point during the night, I’d woken with my usual nightmares, and he’d comforted me as had become our habit.

Early dawn light came in through the curtains, and I sat up and stretched. Mirelda still stood in the corner, watchful. Kellan was already sitting up, and I noticed his eyes slide over me and away. He’d seen how Xavyr and I slept together. Part of me wanted to tell him that nothing had happened between us, but another part wasn’t a hundred percent sure that was true.

We got ready quickly. Now that we’d slept, each beat of my heart reminded me that time was slipping away, that war was coming, that we had much to do.

“Does everyone remember the plan?” I asked once it seemed everyone was ready.

I received a round of nods and verbal affirmation. To Xavyr, Kellan, and Rorie, I said, “See you soon.”

Mirelda and Ruk approached and stood by my side. I focused on the antler and felt the Call of the hunt rise within me, tugging, burning. Once I felt the connection tighten, I reached out and stepped through realms, pulling Mirelda and Ruk with me. Sabin and Jaffe followed.

We stepped out into near darkness. It was quiet, too. Were we in some sort of cave? My heart beat rapidly as my eyes tried to adjust to the lack of light. The ground beneath my feet felt solid enough, which provided a modicum of comfort, but not much. I was once again reminded of why most Hunters used the Ferryman rather than traveling directly from one place to the next.

I was slowly able to make out details. We were in a large space, not a cavern but a room, albeit a rustic one judging from the earthy smell. The ceiling was not too far overhead, but the walls were a ways off. There was something else, but I couldn’t quite register it. Something between us and the walls, misshapen objects like sleeping monsters. Where was the stag’s antler?

No sooner had I thought it than the Call directed my focus up, and there, hanging several feet over our heads, was the antler. I had a moment to wonder at the incredible oddness of this when the lights suddenly came on.

The first thing I saw was Soo Kai.

She stood a dozen feet away, on the other side of a large, rounded dome of iron bars. As the sick realization hit me, a cold shiver of dread formed in my stomach. The Timekeeper had found the second antler. We had been lured here, and we had been trapped.

Images rolled before my eyes: my mother’s eyes looking into mine, her throat being cut, her body falling, hitting the floor. I wobbled where I stood as the agony of it made my knees buckle. I’d been trying to shove it down, trying to survive, but here it was again.

I felt someone’s fingers on my arm, steadying me.
